Bel Canto Singers – “A Spanish Evening” An all-Spanish programme featuring famous Zarzuelas and songs

Bel Canto Singers is proud to present “A Spanish Evening” with guest artists from Mallorca, Spain on 8 June, 2019 (Sat) at Hong Kong City Hall Theatre at 8 pm.
“A Spanish Evneing” is Bel Canto Singers’ first-time ever collaboration with the Spanish artists – soprano Carme Garí and cellist Gabriel Fiol, in an all-Spanish programme with Hong Kong baritone Albert Lim and pianist Lily Yeung. Audiences will get to hear a mixture of solos and duets, selected from a range of Spanish vocal music repertoire, including famous arias from zarzuelas (Spanish operetta) (“Los gavilanes”, “El barberillo de Lavapiés”, “La Gran Via”, “Maravilla”, “Luisa Fernanda”, “La Revoltosa” & “Las Hijas del Zebedeo”), art songs by Federico Mompou (“Combat del somni”) and Manuel de Falla (“Siete Canciones Populares Españolas”), and popular Mallorcan songs and Spanish folk songs, including, not the least, the very popular “Besame Mucho”.

Hailing from Mallorca, soprano Carme Garí studied singing at Liceu Conservatory and graduated in Classical Singing from Catalonia College of Music, both schools being two of the most prestigious conservatories in the country. She has sung in operas and zarzuelas, and has performed widely in Spain. Fellow Mallorcan cellist Gabriel Fiol is also a composer and a pioneer in classical music innovation in the Balearic Islands with his loop pedal and cello. He has performed all over Europe and the US, and has released his first solo album Cello Works in 2014, with music written by him for three cellos. Audiences will get to hear Gabriel performing one of his solo pieces, “Gran Obertura”, in this concert.

Back in Hong Kong, baritone Albert Lim needs no further introduction. As one of the most sought-after vocalists in town as well as a vocal instructor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (APA), Albert has appeared in numerous operas, concerts and musical productions in Hong Kong. Lily Yeung, the pianist, is also a vocal coach at the APA. This time, apart from accompanying the vocalists, Lily will also be performing as a duo with Gabriel the cellist in an arrangement of Granados’ “Andaluza”.

Founded in 1997 and now registered as a charitable organization, Bel Canto Singers aims to create an active performance platform for homegrown vocal talents, as well as to introduce a wider range of vocal music to the general public. Over the years, Bel Canto Singers has produced numerous concerts to critical acclaim, especially for its stylish programming. Future activities in planning by Bel Canto Singers include recording projects in collaboration with local composers, as well as musical theatre and opera productions.
