January’s Freespace Happening presents new sounds for a new year!

Mike Orange, guitarist and keyboardist of Chochukmo, departs from his iconic indie rock style to join hands with guest artists to explore instrumental electronica. Adrian Fu collaborates with The Majestic G to tell a story inspired by parallel universes and dreamscapes through jazz-funk, and jazz quartet In One Stroke performs for the first time with performing artist Han Mei creating Chinese folk-music-inspired jazz.

Transforming the Big Circle into an open-mic stage for performers aged below 12, we have ohmymic – a new talent show presented by ohmykids, where you and your family can show off your performance skills with your best singing, dancing or other artistic turn! To keep you warm in case the weather turns chill we also have skateboarding workshops, WE Dance showcases and workshops, and interactive performances of improvised theatre that transform audience members into performers. For visitors with dogs adopted from the Lifelong Animal Protection Charity, there is a LAP Get-together re-union where lucky visitors have the chance to receive a special gift!

Don’t miss the new “Writing on Leaves - a Wander in the Park” – a guided journey through the Nursery Park led by the House of Hong Kong Literature and featuring poems inspired by different plants. They will also hold a poetry-inspired workshop where you can make your own pot inscribed with poetry. If you would like to learn more about the characteristics of the trees and plants in the Nursery Park, remember to sign up for our regular tree tour and workshop.

On the South Lawn, you can admire the creative ideas of the young stall holders at the ohmykids market, pick up some creative skills of your own with local artist Rainbow Leung at the One Of A Kind Workshop at the M+ Rover Travelling Creative Studio, or learn some basic martial arts kicks and turns at a free workshop led by instructors of the Cha Duk Chang Children’s Cantonese Opera Association.
