“Today I saw 16 swans. God, what beauty!” Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony begins with a radiant dawn – and ends with a majestic hymn to that vision of nature at its most glorious, crowned with a tune that you’ll never forget. It’s a noble counterpart to the fireworks of Liszt’s tempestuous Second Piano Concerto, played by the fabulous Zee Zee – and our distinguished guest conductor Paavo Järvi opens with a colourful slice of Richard Strauss at his most sumptuous.
