13 Oct 2017 ‑ 14 Jan 2018 (every Sun, Wed to Sat) 11am ‑ 6pm (7 hours)

Featuring works by more than forty artists from across Asia and beyond, The Weight of Lightness: Ink Art at M+—the museum’s first presentation of ink art—looks at the diverse explorations that have taken place over the past sixty years. Through paintings, drawings, calligraphy, photographs, installations, and video works from the M+ collection, this thematic exhibition highlights ink art’s boundless creative potential.

Since the mid-twentieth century, artists have examined the practices and concepts of traditional ink art, developing new techniques and forms of expression reflecting their own time and experiences. These experimentations have led to a blossoming of diverse applications and interpretations of the ink aesthetic, an idea central to M+’s strategy of collecting and exhibiting ink art.

The Weight of Lightness: Ink Art at M+ illustrates the tension at the core of ink art—between the material and the spiritual—and introduces the museum’s expansive approach to ink art that underlines its role as a pivotal form of expression and a philosophical foundation in the visual culture of Asia and beyond.

The exhibition includes a playlist that explores the relationship between music and ink art, a commissioned dance performance that takes inspiration from the works in the exhibition, and a screening programme, all of which will further illuminate the ways the ink aesthetic has sparked interdisciplinary dialogues in a contemporary context.

Other programmes accompanying the exhibition, including talks, a teachers’ private view and guided tours, will be available for booking. Access services can also be arranged in advance.

*The exhibition will be closed on 25 December, 2017 and 1 January, 2018
