In the Netherlands, 2019 marks the year of Dutch master painter Rembrandt. Three young Hong Kong artists Jess Lau Ching Wa, Siu Wai Hang and Tung Wing-hong have created new media artworks inspired by Rembrandt.
The exhibition, curated by Eric Leung Shiu Kee, is a crossover between the latest contemporary art and Dutch Golden Age paintings; emerging artists and the old master; Western and Eastern culture. Inspired by the paintings of Rembrandt, the artists created cutting edge new media artworks including videos and kinetic installations to reveal the historical value of the great artist.
Deeply impressed by the details of paintings by Rembrandt, new media artist Jess Lau intends to create a stop motion animation, composed of hands from different paintings of the master.
Rembrandt lighting is a lighting technique that is used in studio portrait photography. It can be achieved using one light and a reflector, or two lights. It is popular because it is capable of producing images which appear both natural and compelling with a minimum of equipment. As an artist specialised in photography, Siu Wai Hang will crossover with the lighting technique in Rembrandt’s painting by photography or new media works.
Tung Wing-hong investigates the relationship between the body and space with video and kinetic installations. He is planning to display video installations including video footages of human body and endless cycles of mechanical movements to reveal the historical value of Rembrandt’s portrait paintings.
