The Hong Kong Rugby Union and World Rugby today announced the rescheduling of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. The tournament, originally on 3-5 April, will now be played at the Hong Kong Stadium from 16-18 October, 2020.

The rescheduling to October is in response to the COVID-19 outbreak and the ensuing travel and logistic implications.

Given the expanding travel measures being put in place amidst ongoing containment efforts, it was felt that the Hong Kong Rugby Union (HKRU) could no longer guarantee to host the event in April without disruption. When offered the opportunity of hosting from 16-18 October by World Rugby, the HKRU felt it was in the best interests of the tournament, the teams, and the fans, to reschedule.

World Rugby has also confirmed that the Hong Kong Sevens in October will be the final round of the 2019/2020 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. Hong Kong will host the 2020/2021 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournament as per usual in the normal April window.

“We are confident that the move to October will ensure a very unique and special 45th Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, and we look forward to once again welcoming the rugby world to Hong Kong” said Mr Robbie McRobbie, Chief Executive Officer at the HKRU.

It is the first time in the tournament’s 45-year history that the Hong Kong Sevens will be played outside of its traditional spring window.

The HKRU remains appreciative of the support of World Rugby, the Hong Kong Government and its other partners and stakeholders, and most especially the fans, who remain the lifeblood of the event, in 2020.

Fans who have purchased tickets via official channels are advised that their tickets will be honoured for the rescheduled event and a full refund will be provided in the event fans are unable to attend this October.

In light of the rescheduled dates, the Hong Kong Sevens public ticket ballot will no longer be drawn this week. Those who have successfully entered the draw prior to the close of registration will be offered an opportunity to extend their entry to a subsequent ballot for the October event.

The Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens will be played from 16-18 October 2020 at the 40,000-seat Hong Kong Stadium.
