Karin Weber Gallery is proud to present ‘Place To Place’, a showcase of two young Hong Kong artists using works on paper to explore themes of place changes and subsequent upheaval. Moving homes can be an intensely emotional experience - the hope and excitement about a new beginning, the challenge of moving on to a new life-stage or environment, the fear of loss of friends and family, the anxiety about change and the future. Adding to the difficulty of the transition are the nostalgic memories or experiences that we ‘inherit’ from our old homes that persist in lingering on in our consciousness. All these complex feelings can be overwhelming and sometimes traumatic to handle. In our latest exhibition – ‘Place to Place’ two young Hong Kong artists share their experiences of coping with relocation. Objects contain memories bitter or sweet and can instantly transport a person back to living space and place. Using various objects such as a metal gate, a bedside cabinet and a clock, artist Carmen Ng re-connects with an apartment she used to call ‘home’ for over twenty years. Despite currently living in a housing estate in the city, artist June Ho often has flashbacks about her childhood days living in the countryside. She depicts these memories in her works, which reflect the tranquil landscapes witnessed daily in her neighbourhood. A combination of imaginative illustrations, etchings and paper-cuts, this gentle yet poignant exhibition encourages viewers to explore their own responses to changes of place or space. About the Artist: Carmen Ng (b. 1988) graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University and has been collaborating with our gallery since her graduation. Renowned for her meticulous brushstroke, her 2016 exhibition ‘Wood Whispers’ drew lots of critical acclaim. Carmen is a multiple award winner, including the distinguished print award in 29th Hong Kong Print Award in 2017 for her book project ‘Illustrated Map of Hong Kong 18 Districts’. June Ho (b. 1990) graduated from the Fine Arts Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has been involved in several book projects and has previously shown in Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea.
