2006年2月1日，國際腎臟病學會（International Society of Nephrology，簡稱ISN）和國際腎臟基金聯盟（International Federation of Kidney Foundation，簡稱IFKF）聯合提議將每年3月第二個星期四定為世界腎臟日。目的在於提高人們對慢性腎臟病以及相關的心血管疾病和死亡率的認識，並重視在慢性腎臟病的早期的檢測和預防方面全球的迫切需求。
