For one night only in Hong Kong BEST COAST – ‘ global icons of cool’ LA Weekly Bethany Cosentino’s bio is the stuff legends are made of, a former child actress, she started writing songs in her teens and was offered deals from major labels but as Cosentino put it she was no pop princess! She founded her own experimental psyche band, Pocahaunted and went on to support Sonic Youth. It was clear this was no ordinary teen. After a brief move to go to school in New York, Cosentino realised that while East Coast girls are hip, she wished she could be a Californian girl again. So she uppped sticks to her beloved West Coast and formed Best Coast with Bobb Bruno. Drawing inspiration from 60’s surf rock and girl groups, Best Coast’s noisy lo-fi sound rededfined the West Coast sound for a whole new generation. Their debut album, ‘Crazy for You’ (featuring Consentino’s cat Snacks on the cover) entered the Bilboard digital charts at No. 10. International festival headlines spots followed with LA Weekly labelling them ‘global icons of cool’. Drew Barrymore directed the promo for Our Deal’ a modern West Side story featuring Chloe Moretz of Kick Ass fame. It seemed like everyone on the planet wanted in on the Best Coast cool. BBC, Rolling Stone, Nylon, Spin, NME, Vogue all clamoured for Best Coast. Cosentino’s huge appeal as indie girl icon of her generation was picked up by Urban Outfitters who gave her a clothes line and and NME who ranked her as No. 4 on their ‘Cool List’, coollest person on the planet way ahead of her boyfriend, Wavves front man Nathian Wiiliams No.68.
