Gestural, bravura oil paintings manifest the inner expression of the local artist, Jessica Cheung. In her works, she would like express more than an external narrative and present internal, spiritual meaning. Jessica maintains an open-ended work from direct observation, and studio practice. Using the still-life genre as a catalyst, she enjoys the moment when she psychically connected to the microcosmic world by closely looking at the space in between objects, when everything becomes abstract. “I discover their inner beauties, this expands my vision,” she expressed while staring at her canvas. It seems that her emotion was totally attached to her artworks and she continued to elaborate that “I catch that moment and release them from the boundary of different objects, it makes me feel that the paintings themselves take on a life of their own.” Such an unplanned experiences always inspire her and continually surprise her. This is what her painting is about, this is why she paints, as well as this is what and why she brings her “microcosm world” collection in this solo exhibition. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Jessica Cheung received her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture. While living in New York from 2005 to 2010, Jessica held several exhibitions which included the galleries in SoHo and Chelsea art districts, and her work is in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Art Library in New York.
