"Friends After 3.11"
Japan︱2011︱120 min︱IWAI Shunji
2012 Berlin International Film Festival Forum
The dual tragedy of the East Japan Earthquake on March 11th, 2011 made countless people lost their homes and loved ones, yet the consequential accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Reactor caused a greater threat. With the nuclear meltdown, the pressure control pool explosion, and the coolant leakage, radiation was spread through the air, ground, and seas to pollute the entirety of Japan. And with a huge increase in people speaking out against nuclear energy, demonstrations have been occurring all over Japan.
Director IWAI Shunji, born in Sendai city of Miyagi prefecture, started a dinner party with some actor and journalist friends on June 9th, 2011 “in order to properly learn about Nuclear Power”. This was the start of “Rokku no Kai”. Discussing about nuclear power with other new friends at this once-a-month gathering, the idea came to director IWAI, “I want to capture and bring them together to these encounters.” And it was from this thought that Friends After 3.11 came to be.
It was only after the incident at the Fukushima Nuclear Reactor that we Japanese became fully aware of the horrors of nuclear power. Amidst this depressing reality, we portray the persistent and ever-diligent efforts of specialists, scientists, and journalists. Director IWAI also travelled to the aftermath in Miyagi prefecture along with anti-nuclear idol, FUJINAMI Kokoro. Seeing the true devastation up on the screen, and listening to the genuine words of these “friends”, it is in these conversations, we hope to find the next step towards Japan’s future.
