Have you noticed the yarn wrapping post along Kingston Street in Causeway Bay and at SOHO Ladder Street during winter? This type of street art is called Guerilla Knitting, also known as Graffiti Knitting or Yarn Bombing. The practice was initially about reclaiming and personalizing sterile or cold public places and has since developed with worldwide knitters into a diverse range of projects.
To celebrate the International Woman’s Day in early March, Videotage started the first Guerilla Knitting session with Arthur Wong, an artist who loves to incorporate knitting and other crafts in his art practice. Participants knit away the afternoon and bring small but lovely changes to Cattle Depot Artist Village. We share the same view that the knitting was so enjoyable, relax and a good chance to meet new and old friends. True, but is it all Guerilla Knitting is about? Well, Arthur has something to add.
We are most delighted to invite Arthur for a Sunday afternoon talk on socially engaged and participatory art practices - Guerilla Knitting, the philosophy behind it and its relationship with new media arts.
