Art Central is Hong Kong’s exciting new art fair, showcasing the next generation of talent alongside some of the most established contemporary galleries and art spaces from across the globe.
Launched by the founders of ART HK, Art Central debuts 14-16 March 2015 (VIP Preview 13 March 2015) to coincide with Art Basel’s Hong Kong edition.
Since ART HK’s launch seven years ago, Hong Kong has firmly cemented itself as Asia’s art hub. Hong Kong now has the third largest auction market after New York and London. Zero tax on the import and export of art and established collectors from all over the Asia-Pacific region provide the foundation for Hong Kong’s thriving gallery scene. World-class international galleries are members of the 51-strong Hong Kong Gallery Association, having opened exhibition spaces in Hong Kong to take advantage of the growing Asian interest. The rapid development of the M+ museum of visual culture in Hong Kong, and the launch of Art Basel in 2013 are changing Hong Kong’s landscape.
The addition of Art Central to Hong Kong’s art scene is testament to this. The fair will feature over 70 leading international galleries and will be staged in the largest ever specially commissioned, purpose-built structure to have ever been erected in Hong Kong. Located on the new Central Harbourfront, the fair very is conveniently located less than 2km from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, where Art Basel takes place.
SECTORS
The fair has two specialised sectors: Central and Rise.
Central
The main sector, Central, provides a significant platform for both established and emerging galleries from Asia and beyond. This sector welcomes solo or group shows with a strong curatorial premise. The fair accepts painting, sculpture, drawings, video and digital art as well as photography and editions.
Rise
Rise presents galleries and art spaces launched in the past 5 years. Galleries in this sector present tightly curated solo or dual artist booths. Rise features emerging artists as well as artists working within emerging markets.
Adapting to changing expectations and new ways to experience art, this sector welcomes presentations from non-traditional galleries operating online or in temporary venues.
GALLERIES
Art Central will showcase more than 70 contemporary art galleries in a purpose-built tent on Hong Kong’s new Central Harbourfront in the heart of Hong Kong, and less than 2 kilometers from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre where Art Basel is held.
Galleries or dealers with true artist representation that hold regular exhibitions on their own business premises, within external project spaces, or in the virtual space, will be eligible for participation.
Selection for participation in the fair is based on the curatorial strength and premise of the gallery’s exhibition program and their represented artists. Criteria such as quality of the artwork, previous art fair presentations, and any projects undertaken by the gallery both locally and overseas are central to the decision.
GETTING TO THE FAIR
Located on Hong Kong’s new Central Harbourfront, the Art Central tent is just a few minutes’ walk from Hong Kong MTR station, Central MTR station and the Star Ferry pier.
Less than 2km from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Art Central is easily accessed from Art Basel’s show.
