A cherished tale, not quite the way you remember it: the fairy story with the glass slipper and golden carriage is transformed into an enchanting opera that replaces some of the special effects with the real magic of true love and goodness. You kind of know this story. Evil stepsisters dislike and abuse the beautiful Angelina. There's a ball, and Angelina manages to be the belle of it, thanks to the help of the wise Alidoro and a beautiful bracelet. After the ball, the prince Don Ramiro finds his princess and is treated to her true beauty.
Rossini’s take on the Cinderella story is no simplistic fairy tale. There’s no pumpkin coach and no glass slipper, and in place of a fairy godmother there’s a wise old philosopher who wants his handsome prince to marry not just the fairest of them all but also the best and the kindest. Yet, while reason and realism prevail, there’s no shortage of magical enchantment in the miraculous coloratura score, which happily marries high comedy and heartfelt emotion.
