Roger Lin Studio Ltd. and tumtum.hk are proud to present “New Art Hong Kong” exhibition: “Detachment” by Uku Chan. In light of the long-term marginalization of Hong Kong visual arts, there has been an emergence of localism. Roger Lin Studio Ltd. and tumtum.hk are going to promote “New Art Hong Kong” as a movement, in order to review the position of Hong Kong arts in the context of China and the world. There are actually many artists with great potentials in Hong Kong who are also highly competitive when compared to foreign artists. They have been “hibernating” or “invisible” and are waiting to be discovered. With the unbelievably high rent in Hong Kong, emerging artists have been having difficulties in showing their works or exchanging with the public. Thanks to the venue sponsorship by Moon Gallery, we can now organize a solo show for some brilliant yet underrated artists. Uku Chan: An Artist Rescued by Painting Uku Chan studied fine art in Australia for a year and unfortunately had to quit his study due to financial issues. He then made several attempts to enroll into the art programme in Hong Kong universities and failed. After giving up art for a few years, he decided to go back to CUSCS to further his study on art. To save his energies for creation at night, Chan now chooses to drive a train at Disneyland which helps him survive without thinking too much. Even his “daytime” life is boring, he still gets countless inspirations. Painting has become an temple where he can stand against the world, a medication which enables him to be extraordinary and makes him extremely loyal . Chan’s abstract paintings are full of rich colours and complicated yet dynamic brushworks. His works reveal the situation of non-elites which is to constantly redefine oneself to seek for a way of survival. Chan sees painting as his religion, and strongly believes that he can attain a certain state by creating restlessly. He never takes the artworks as the ultimate goal but enjoys painting as a means to help him contemplate.
