Come to Yau Ma Tei and party on 26 July as Take a Swing showcases Hong Kong’s first outdoor live music and street dance in the Yau Ma Tei Community Centre Rest Garden.
Some of the best Hong Kong dancers will perform different street dance styles accompanied by funk and neo soul music from the Elektryk Laydee.
As well as the music and dance, the park will be transformed into a Cantonese Disco Party with DJ mix featuring Hong Kong’s best 70s, 80s and 90s Cantopop spun by DJ Shelf-Index.
Guest curated by Hongboy@Rhythm Attack, in partnership with the band leader Teriver Cheung and DJ Shelf-Index, this energetic event is a rare opportunity to get an insider’s dope on what’s happening on the streets.
Words from the Artists

Drawing from our experience as a performer and curator at Freespace Fest and Take A Leap, we will embark on a new and innovative approach to performance in Take A Swing. By combining street dance and live music, we hope to inspire an interdisciplinary approach in performing, while engaging the audience by inviting them to experience the unique rhythm and energy of street dance.

When I was in New York, I often played with American jazz, soul and funk musicians. I learnt from their traditions of the African music, genres that may be unfamiliar to the Hong Kong public, but in fact, their primitive energy is just brilliant to go with dance.
At the beginning of 2014, I performed in Taiwan with other musicians in ‘Share Your Love’ music party where some 600 dancers danced their way and moved to the beat. The visual impact was stunning. In this collaboration with West Kowloon, we have the same cross-cover elements between different art forms but would step out from traditional indoor performance venue to outdoor communal space. Through my own experience, I hope to share great music with Hong Kong people and to let them experience the perfect union of audio and visual.

Aiming to challenge and take DJing and electronic music out of their usual realm, I wish to create a new experience for performers and audience by blending different cultural elements. Through performances that encourage people to participate and create a voice of their own, audience will gain a deeper understanding of electronic music as an art form and as a tool for creation and performances. Take A Swing will definitely be an unforgettable experience. I look forward to the collaboration with Hongboy and Teriver, and the interaction with the audience in the open space in Yau Ma Tei.
