“In-between” is an annual exhibition of Through Our Eyes Photography Education Programme. As the title denotes, the exhibition is a sequential unfolding of events in the past, present and future, presenting an unlimited possibilities through time. It consists of more than 100 photographs exploring the multitude of ways that photography can be used – as an art medium, a social document, an education tool, a therapeutic process, a mirror to oneself as well as a window to the world.
Through Our Eyes Photography Education Programme has entered its 9th edition. This year, the programme has been handed over to kaitak, Centre for Research and Development under Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University, for operation. Situated in Kowloon East, kaitak is a building of the colonial era that has long stood aloft Kwun Tong Road and has witnessed the changes of the community over the decades. We intend to begin with Kowloon East; we use images to record and conserve the rapidly changing appearance of the community; and we try to observe and capture the gradual disappearance and reappearance of various traces around the ticking clock.
The phrase “In-between” stresses on flow, shift, progression and disappearance, like the open quotation mark, putting into brackets a contained time and space dimension, allowing people to express their memories and emotions. The concept of “In-between” become inevitably linked to the fundamentals of photography, inducing the theme and direction of this photography education scheme.
The educators of Through Our Eyes have taught at 10 secondary schools in Kowloon East. In the school workshops, our educators have taught the techniques in photography; through lively and innovative practices, they have also inspired students to explore unusual perspectives on the most ordinary matters. The interactive teaching approach has motivated the creativity of both educators and students, and eventually fostered this exhibition. The exhibition will as well showcase the fruitful community project under the Through Our Eyes Photography Education Programme.
The exhibition consists of more than 100 photographs exploring the multitude of ways that photography can be used – as an art medium, a social document, an education tool, a therapeutic process, a mirror to oneself as well as a window to the world. The exhibition is divided into three distinctive yet interrelated parts: student works, works from community-based programmes and works from professional artists.
