KAWS’s Monumental Sculpture “CLEAN SLATE” takes us to a new stage of life In 2010, Harbour City along with curator AllRightsReserved invited renowned New York artist KAWS to present his first exhibition in Greater China, “KAWS: Passing Through”, at Harbour City. The exhibition was supported by many fans and celebrities, triggering an enthusiastic public response in Hong Kong. Thus, “KAWS: Passing Through” began a world tour, which took the massive sculpture to six cities in the United States and also Paris. KAWS has elected to collaborate again with Harbour City and AllRightsReserved to present his latest sculpture in an exhibition entitled, “KAWS: CLEAN SLATE”, on view from 18 September – 19 October, 2014 at Ocean Terminal Forecourt of Harbour City. Expanding on his previous creative concepts, KAWS will unveil a new monumental sculpture titled “CLEAN SLATE”. Measuring 7 meters tall, it will be among the largest sculpture the artist has ever made. The title “CLEAN SLATE” refers to wiping out the past and starting over again, stepping into the next stage of life. Following “Passing Through”, the new sculpture represents KAWS’s signature COMPANION character now on his feet, in Harbour City. “CLEAN SLATE” also carries with him two smaller COMPANIONS in his arms – a new development, taking his viewers into the next chapter of life. Moreover, the Gallery by the Harbour will exhibit a selection of KAWS’s editioned prints to showcase his creative milestones! KAWS Brooklyn-based, KAWS is a world-renowned artist who exhibits in museums and galleries internationally. KAWS’s art stands within the historical continuum that began with Pop Art, straddling the line between fine art and global commerce. From his 5-meter tall sculpture COMPANION (PASSING THROUGH) to his recent 7-meter tall sculpture CLEAN SLATE, his artworks are immediately recognizable as he transforms iconic pop culture characters into thought-provoking works of art. His work possesses a sophisticated humor while utilizing a refined graphic language that revitalizes figuration with big, bold gestures and keen, playful intricacy. By producing fine art via thoughtful interplay with consumer products and collaborations with global brands, KAWS moves beyond the sphere of the exclusive art market to occupy a more complex, global market. ​ KAWS was born in Jersey City, New Jersey and received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts.
