Origins
Golden Lotus is a musical adaptation of the most infamous classic Chinese novel of all time, Jin Ping Mei (The Golden Lotus). The novel, first published in 1610, was written by an unknown author who was too frightened to reveal his identity for fear of persecution. The novel, despite its literary merits, has become known as a work of pornography for its vivid depiction of erotic sexuality for which it has been officially banned in China since 1687. Despite this the novel survived surreptitiously and its story has been endeared by the Chinese for centuries.
The nucleus of the plot from which Jin Ping Mei is derived comes from another classic Chinese novel Shui-hu Zhuan(Outlaws of the Marsh). The two versions of the story, however, differ in many ways in both plot and style. George Chiang’s musical, Golden Lotus, is adapted from the version of the story found in Jin Ping Mei.
