申東赫，首名於北韓著名的第14號集中營出生並逃脫的脫北者。父母由守衛「被證婚」，竟是父親勤勞工作的獎賞，與他們的意願無關。申自出生即淪為政治犯，6歲起於煤礦勞動，唯一吃過的肉食來自老鼠。他對自由毫無概念，14歲時告發母親與兄長逃亡導致他們被公開處決，壓抑禁閉的洗腦教育讓他不懂何謂親情，只渴望生存。
國際特赦組織在2011年估計約有20萬人被囚於集中營，在屬於「完全監控區」內的囚犯均為終生監禁。根據組織在2013年的衛星圖片分析，像城市一樣大的第14號集中營正在擴大，並經常出現強暴、拷打、非法處決及強迫奴役的情況。
