Everyone deserves a decent place to live – this is not a dream. This is something we should act on. World Habitat Day is the one day set aside annually to recognize the basic right of all humanity to adequate shelter, and to encourage grassroots action toward ending poverty housing. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1985 that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day. Habitat for Humanity believes that a decent home opens the door to improved health, better performance in school, greater economic opportunities and increased community cohesion. Our work also provides a stable environment for our next generation to grow, help eliminate poverty and cross-generation poverty in the long run, thus bringing hope to the community. In Hong Kong, we set up two programs, namely “Happy Homes”and “Project Home Works”, to provide cleaning and basic repairing services to low income families, the elderlies and the disabled. Our home partners do not only receive in return a clean and safe home, but also feel the warmth through exchanging with our volunteers. In more than 70 countriesincluding China around the world, we provide permanent housing solutions for people vulnerable to, or afflicted by natural disasters, conflicts and other calamities. It is also our mission to nurture experienced volunteering teams from around the globe to provide decent housing in the community and support youth development. On Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, Habitat for Humanity joins with our partners around the world to rededicate ourselves to a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Let us fill our homes and communities with hope.
