Bolshoi Ballet In Cinema returns exclusively to Broadway Circuit for the 3rd consecutive year beginning Nov 2nd for yet another exciting new season!
Co-presented with the Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF), Bolshoi Ballet In Cinema 2014-15 is a part of the exciting line up of 2015 Festival PLUS programme, featuring 7 exceptional ballets including 5 magnificent classics and 2 unreleased productions, all filmed directly in Moscow. The season features some of the greatest classics such as La Bayadère, Nutcracker and Swan Lake, the Shakespearian Romeo and Juliet, and the now classical The Pharaoh’s Daughter, together with the 2 unreleased productions of The Legend of Love and Ivan the Terrible.
Except for The Pharaoh’s Daughter which was recreated by French choreographer Pierre Lacotte, the works featured this season will pay tribute to Yuri Grigorovich, who has influenced choreography at the Bolshoi and throughout the world for the past fifty years.
Specifically shot for the big screen, filmed in high definition and 5.1 sound with over 10 cameras, the Bolshoi broadcasts provide a unique opportunity for the audience to experience an unprecedented proximity with the artists and enjoy a unique look behind the scenes of the most renowned ballet company in the world: extra footage including interviews with the dancers and choreographers and special backstage visits.
YURI GRIGOROVICH
After being accepted into the prestigious Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in 1946, Yuri Grigorovich went on to become a soloist at the Kirov Ballet of St. Petersburg where he stayed until 1962. He then joined the Bolshoi Theatre as Artistic Director in 1964 where he stayed until 1995, thus setting a record period of time.
He choreographed new versions of the Petipa ballets, such as La Bayadère, Don Quichotte, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. He has also set a new style in Russian Ballet with unique pieces such as Spartacus, Ivan the Terrible and The Legend of Love, one of his first creations. Having worked with all the major dancers in Russia, Yuri Grigorovich is now a world reference and part of the Bolshoi’s company identity.
