Professional Japanese Sumo wrestlers in action in Hong Kong!
This year’s SumoSushiSake will be held on Saturday, December
13, 2014 at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade. The festival, which combines three of
Japan’s most beloved traditions: sumo wrestling, sushi and sake, has stepped up its line up this
year with professional sumo wrestlers Wakaryusei Keisuke and Shoketsu Yoshiaki, both ranked
top 10 in the Makushita division in Japan, battling it out. Onokuni Yasushi, the 62nd Yokozuna
Grand Champion, will also be attending the event. Don’t miss this opportunity to watch 300-pound
professional Japanese sumo wrestlers in action, while sipping and slurping on delicious food and
drinks. Also, not to be missed is the popular sushi and hot dog eating contests, as well as Hong
Kong’s best underground bands performing on the waterfront in West Kowloon. This outdoor event
is expected to attract over 8,000 visitors locally and abroad.
SumoSushiSake’s expanded food and drinks line up this year is well worth looking forward to. New
to the roster are Tiger Curry, Max Food Lab, Mr. Bing, 298 Nikuya Kitchen, Tokyo Agura Ramen,
special meats from the Kagoshima prefecture, Tararan-ya and Soft Crème. Returning from last
year will be Sugo Sushi, Wagyu Master, Nan Tei, Fork-Eat and Wolfgang Flying Brats. Of course,
the event wouldn’t be complete without an amazing drinks line up. For those above the age of 18,
there will be tons of Japanese sake and shochu, and plenty of Suntory Beer served. Get ready to
soak up some sun while tantalizing your taste buds over sumo wrestling matches, hot dog and
sushi eating contests, and live music throughout the day.
As the national sport of Japan, sumo wrestling has maintained a high degree of popularity both in
Japan and abroad. At this year’s SumoSushiSake, the 62nd Yokozuna Grand Champion, Onokuni
Yasushi (who weighed close to 200kg at the peak of his career), together with professional
wrestlers Wakaryusei Keisuke and Shoketsu Yoshiaki, will present sumo wrestling etiquette and
demonstration matches. Keisuke and Yoshiaki weigh 130kg and 160kg respectively, and both are
ranked top 10 within the Makushita division in Japan.
