Award-winning Belgian filmmakers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne continue their incredible run of form with another brilliantly observed slice of working-class life. Late on a Friday afternoon, Sandra (Marion Cotillard) learns that she will lose her job at the local factory as part of a corporate downsizing initiative. Her 16 co-workers were forced to vote as to whether they get their sizeable year-end bonus, or Sandra keeps her job. The decision has gone to appeal, and Sandra has until Monday morning to convince her colleagues to let her stay on. This incredible simple premise, which sees Sandra traverse the town, going from house to house, pleading for her job. Cotillard’s incredible performance - which has earned her an Oscar nomination - raises the film up to must-see status.

Based on the complex private life of revered 18th century German writer and philosopher Frederich Schiller, director Dominik Graf creates a period drama rich in historical detail, yet driven by an incredibly modern sensibility. Devoted sisters Charlotte and Caroline von Lengefeld have always shared as much of their lives as possible. When they both meet and fall in love with the charismatic Schiller, a unique rivalry threatens their bond. Inspired by decadent and liberating new ideas from their French neighbours, Schiller proposes the three of them live together in a menage a trois. At first this passionate arrangement delights all parties, but before long begins to drive a wedge between the two siblings. Featuring startling performances from its three leads, Beloved Sisters is a bold revisionist take on the period drama driven by a vibrant urgency that is as disarming to audiences as it is utterly captivating.
