Dedicated to the exploration and performance of Shakespeare's works, Shakespeare’s Globe has held two hugely successful tours in Asia. This September, the renowned theatre company returns to Hong Kong for a third time with Globe to Globe Hamlet, a new production of the classic tale that has played to great acclaim around the world. Directed by Shakespeare’s Globe Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole and Bill Buckhurst, the Globe’s ambitious global theatrical adventure lands in Hong Kong with five shows in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ Lyric Theatre from September 4-6, 2015.
Continuing the Globe’s commitment to expose the Bard’s work to as many people as possible, Dominic Dromgoole has created a fresh, travelling version of Hamlet with a stripped-down stage that can be set up at any venue around the world. Using just twelve actors for over two dozen parts, the 16-member company (including four stage managers) is in the middle of a truly global tour that will visit all 205 nations in the world over the course of two years.
“A compelling Hamlet by Shakespeare's Globe theatre allows the text to dazzle and shine” NRC Handelsblad, Netherlands
With a new version of the Bard’s tragedy that teases out its latent streak of gallows humour and celebrates the exuberance and invention of its language, the company will perform in a huge range of unique and atmospheric venues, from village squares to national theatres, from palaces to beaches. They will travel by boat, sleeper train, jeep, tall ship, bus and aeroplane across the seven continents.
“A production that prizes efficiency, clarity, accessibility and above all energy” The New York Times
Matthew Gregory, Executive Producer of ABA Productions, says, “We are extremely pleased to have been able to secure a stop in Hong Kong for Globe to Globe Hamlet – an international touring event of epic proportions for a truly international city. Three years ago we promised that we would work with Shakespeare’s Globe for a minimum of three consecutive years. We are proud to be achieving this now with a wonderful new production of Hamlet, and are already looking forward to the years ahead, and continuing our partnership with one of the best theatre production companies in the world.”
About the play
Learning of his father’s death, Prince Hamlet comes home to find his uncle married to his mother and installed on the Danish throne. At night, the ghost of the old king demands that Hamlet avenge his ‘foul and most unnatural murder’.
Encompassing political intrigue and sexual obsession, philosophical reflection and violent action, Hamlet is Shakespeare’s ‘poem unlimited’, a colossus in the story of the English language and the fullest expression of his genius.

Shakespeare’s Globe
Founded by the pioneering American actor and director Sam Wanamaker, Shakespeare's Globe (www.shakespearesglobe.com) is a unique international resource dedicated to the exploration of William Shakespeare's work and the playhouse for which he wrote, through the connected means of performance and education. The institute rebuilt the Bard’s old Globe Theatre at almost exactly the same location, and it has since expanded to a complex with facilities that serve as integral resources for students, teachers and academics from all over the world. The Shakespeare’s Globe also provides educational programmes and publishes material for students at all levels.
