The exhibition is a retrospective show which features 25 pieces of works by Walasse TING from 1968 to 1990. TING (1929-2010) was born in Wuxi, China. At the age of 23, he was settled in France and became acquainted withthe artists of the anti-formalism movement known as CoBrA. He was strongly influenced by Matisse and some other masters and he created works with unexpected force and flying emotions. His works were mainly a plain black abstract work made up of Chinese cursive calligraphy lines and western oil paint which implied a strong Oriental spiritual connotation.
Being inspired by Abstract Expressionism in the 60’s, while exploring the fusion of Chinese and Western aesthetics, his works were a unique blend of vivid colours on rice paper infused by a subtle spirit of Chinese ink painting. With expressive dripping strokes and bright fluorescent colours, the women, flowers, parrots, horses and fish are energetic and sensational in TING’s paintings. The luminous colours exude the fragrance of flowers as well as his passionate soul.
