"Photography is the only language that can be understood anywhere in the world" Bruno Barbey
Housed in a Grade III historic building, Hong Kong’s first and only photographic museum F11 marked its official opening with a “Best in Show” exhibition by legendary American photographer Elliott Erwitt in September 2014. Renowned war photographer Robert Capa’s “China 1938“ exhibition followed, arousing much interest amongst photography lovers.
The latest exhibition to be held from 28May to 15July – “China since 1973” by Barbey Barbey, French renowned documentary photographer and a member of Magnum Photos – is one of the associated exhibitions held by Le French May and will be Barbey’s first exhibition in Hong Kong.
Bruno Barbey – “China since 1973”
China’s major changes through his lens
The exhibition features a selection of images of China taken by Bruno Barbey since September 1973, when he joined the then French President Georges Pompidou’s official visit to China. Barbey discovered a country undergoing major changes, yet still under the influence of the Cultural Revolution. A few years later, the photographer was back and saw already the effects of Deng Xiaoping’s proposition to the Chinese people: “get rich.” Nanjing, Suzhou, Macau, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai etc. Barbey returned to China many times and visited various places. With every visit, he observed the profound changes in the country to which his photographs bear witness. Apart from Barbey’s selected works, a short film called “China in Kodachrome Mixe et sous Titre“ made by Barbey’s spouse, Caroline, will also be shown.
