With the recent MAMMA MIA! And The Sound of Music, Broadway theatrical productions with international cast have been hugely popular in Hong Kong. Local productions, on the other hand, have received much less attention from the Hong Kong audience, particularly those presented by up-and-coming young artists.
Gabriella So, a local millennial with a strong passion in theatrical performance, once struggled to find her place in this small industry, but she didn’t give up. Her grit and wit have eventually brought her career to another level. Her effort in producing a script based on Truman Capote’s novella Breakfast at Tiffany's, along with the proposal of directing and acting the story bilingually herself, have been recognised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Hong Kong Arts Centre, which subsidized the venue for her to materialise her first ever theatrical performance in Hong Kong.
Made known by Audrey Hepburn's performance and little black dress, Breakfast at Tiffany's is best remembered as a romantic comedy. Staying true to the original story, So deconstructs and explores the underlying sentiments of the novella, in which dark sides of human desire are revealed. As in Gone Girl and Maleficent, So sees Holly the protagonist as a tragic heroine, who constantly struggles to define her identity and to satisfy her ever-changing desire. Set in 1940s, Holly's story still resonates to us here in this city in this very moment…
So is one of the few local young artists who has successfully made her first step. Having worked and learned from many great masters such as Will Smith, Lee Lik-chee and Chip Tsao, she is definitely the new rising star to be watched out for.

Gabriella So
Hong Kong-native Gabriella So was nurtured by giants of the performing arts industry, including Will Smith, during her UCLA years. Since the return to her homeland in 2012, she remains enchanted by the American pioneer spirit and has been working towards becoming China's next top auteur actress. Partnered with "Shaolin Soccer" blockbuster director Lee Lik-chee, she is on her way to producing a series of rom-com with the veins of a fairytale aspect but a sinister twist. Her dream is to build a Globe Theatre for those films to honour her muse Shakespeare, on a midsummer's night.
