Opera Hong Kong proudly presents Puccini’s famous opera Tosca from 7 to 10 October at 7:45pm; and on 11 at 3pm at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The opera, a production of Taormina Opera Festival in Italy, will feature a stellar cast of distinguished artists from China and Italy.
World’s most acclaimed soprano He Hui will share the stage with China’s Three Tenors, which comprise of Warren Mok, internationally known tenor and Artistic Director of Opera Hong Kong, Dai Yuqiang who has garnered accolades in mainland and from overseas, and Wei Song, Artistic Director of Shanghai Opera House. The opera will be accompanied by The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
He Hui has earned the fame as one of the best Verdi and Puccini voices in the world. She is acclaimed as “the best Madame Butterfly one could wish for”. Winner of Oscar of the Opera by the Arena di Verona Foundation in 2010 and “Verona Lirica” award in 2013, Hui is the only Chinese opera singer to have performed the lead roles in all six major opera houses in the world including Teatro alla Scala, Wiener Staatsoper and Metropolitan Opera. Also sharing the title role is Bulgarian-born Svetla Vassileva, one of the most sought-after sopranos for her “beautifully free and unencumbered voice."- The Times (London). Her repertoire encompasses a wide range of operatic roles.
China’s Three Tenors are acclaimed for their Chinese-Western singing style and lively stage performance. The trio has held over 60 concerts in major cities around the world including their London’s Royal Albert Hall debut attended by Queen Elizabeth II. The three tenors are named “Global Messengers of Chinese Culture.”
Hailed by maestro Lorin Maazel as one of the world class orchestras, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra will join force with Opera Hong Kong Chorus and Opera Hong Kong Children Chorus to unleash their full passion to relive the classic under the baton of Gianluca Martinenghi.
Tosca is one of the most popular and widely performed in operatic history. Since its premiere, audiences around the world have been captivated by its story of love, lust, revenge and sacrifice, woven with torture, murder and suicide into a tragic love story with some of Puccini’s best-known lyrical arias such as “vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore” (I lived for art, I lived for love) and “E lucevan le stele” (And the stars shone).
Taormina, a hill city on Monte Tauro in Sicily, organizes music and opera festivals featuring distinguished artists from all over the world every year. Founder and Artistic Director of Taormina Opera Festival, Enrico Castiglione is an internationally acclaimed theatre director, set designer, TV and mega concert producer. Many of his productions have been broadcasted by Italy’s RAI TV worldwide, including Tosca for the Giacomo Puccini’s Centennial and Leonard Bernstein’s comic opera Candide. He is also the founder and Artistic Director of Italian festivals.
