This photography exhibition, involving 5 months’ preparatory work, would not have been possible without the tremendous assistance rendered by Hong Kong Tramways to our group of 10 photographers. Indeed, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Hong Kong Tramways. With privileged access to both Whitty Street and Sai Wan Ho Tram Depots, our photographers were able to capture these many unique and interesting images.
At Whitty Street Tram Depot, activities such as tram building, maintenance and repair, advertisement installation and removal, tram cleaning and safety checks are conducted every day. Sai Wan Ho Tram Depot is mainly for tram parking. When the trams were ready for service, we followed them until the last trams stopped. We captured shots in the early morning hours when maintenance trams were called out for repair. On Hong Kong Island there are 6 tram routes running both eastbound and westbound; the longest route being from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan.
On display are over 150 photos. One interesting aspect is that by selecting a photo, viewers can share their tram riding experiences with those participating photographers. Such an interaction is a journey through our collective memories, and we hope that we can treasure those experiences and realise how the tramways have contributed to our society. Trams have become part of our way of life, accessible to all within our society.
In the series of following trams 04:06 – 01:07, we tried to capture various scenes in every hour. The photos depict scenes in various lighting, weather and road conditions, the landmark buildings on Hong Kong Island, the moods of the passengers, road users on the tracks, the much-sought after tram numbered 120 (which still retains the 1949 post-war style) and so on. It is a montage combining various scenes all on a long journey which starts from the depots and finishes at the terminuses.
Participating in this exhibition are Michelle Chan, Wesley Chan, Karen Choi, Irene Flanhardt, Annie Kwong, Marissa Reyes, Calvin Sit, Alan Tse, Jimmy Tsang and Tracey van Geest.
Hong Kong Tramways was founded in 1904. It is the world’s largest double-decker tram fleet still in operation, carrying an average of 200,000 passengers every day.
