"There seems to be only one thing happened in 2014 in Hong Kong." by Chung Sin Ying
A year has passed since our last encounter — “The Exhibition for Local Arteople 2014”, as a group of local art lovers, we are keen to once again share unique thoughts, new tricks that we have leant in the year 2014. “The Exhibition for Local Arteople 2015” a group exhibition featuring artists from many levels of practice ranging from professional artists to fresh Art school graduates to simply Art lovers, hence including people from every aspects of the society. We are brought together to examine the idea of “Locality” from multiple viewpoints, bringing into focus clear pictures of authentic Hong Kong Art.
“Locality”— the term in itself is a fascinating idea, it an inclusive yet exclusive term, the idea of us and them. An idea inherently characterize people into groups based on their geological location or common traits. “Locality” and “Boundary” almost come hand in hand, you cannot get one without the other. Though, beside the identical geological state, what else segregate us as people from Hong Kong, on what ground are we prescribed the term “local”? We do not draw ourselves onto a map when defining “locality” or do we? These are the questions embedded in our current society that we would very much like to explore as a group. Through the voices of 23 artists, we hope to zoom in on and resonate the very quality that define us hence to open a dialog in the public sphere reconciling values and culture that we had become so used to.
Whether if you like it or not, many of us at various levels were struck by the magnitude of events in 2014. That is a common experience that most Hong Kong people are now shared with, a part of history that we are bounded to live in. To a certain extend, it has united us as a whole, not in a political sense but in a general sense that Hong Kong people are now part of this historical context. The term “local” is prescribed with an additional layer of meaning. It would be very interesting to see how it has manifested in the Hong Kong Art now!
藝民集 is a registered organization based in Hong Kong, founded by a group of art lovers at 2012. Members of this group call themselves Arteople, which is the combination of the words Art and People. 藝民集 meaning of "gathering of art people" basically, aimed to release and spread out the power of art, and to make more common people become arteople.
