Concerts & DJ's:
Dave Clarke (UK)
Famously dubbed “The Baron Of Techno” by the late, great BBC Radio DJ John Peel, Dave Clarke has been one of the most respected names in the genre for more than 25 years. Driven by an anarchist streak a mile wide and a spirit of pure punk, Clarke is known for producing dark and uncompromising techno and electro that fuels the world’s most discerning dance floors.
Gilles Peterson (UK)
Gilles Peterson is a living legend in the recording industry. The UK-based international club DJ, who earned his chops on the pirate radio circuit in London before graduating to BBC Radio 1 in the late 90s, is well known for his current three-hour Saturday afternoon radio show on BBC 6Music. In addition, Peterson is a producer, record label boss, record collector (with over 30,000 records in his personal collection, it’s something he readily describes as an addiction) and organiser of the Worldwide Awards, held in London each year to showcase the best of new music. This event has since expanded into two editions of the Worldwide Festival, held in France and Switzerland, an event that has earned a reputation as a raucous, weeklong celebration of quality musical production.
Lady Leshurr (UK)
Lady Leshurr has gained global recognition for her quick-witted rap soaked with a unique blend of humour and self-empowerment. Pushing grime into the mainstream spotlight alongside peers Skepta and Stormzy, the Birmingham MC has been touted by the NME as the “The Queen of Grime” amassing over 73 million collective YouTube views. Don’t miss Lady Leshurr’s Asian debut at Sónar Hong Kong – a royal occasion which promises to be truly unforgettable.
Nosaj Thing x Daito Manabe (UK&Japan)
The American producer and Japanese creator will come to Hong Kong for one of their rare dates to present their innovative show at SonarClub. Both previously worked together on videos for Nosaj Thing's two-track “Eclipse/Blue” as part of the “Home” LP in 2012, and “Cold Stares” by “Fated” (2015), both directed by Manabe with his typical panache, combining elements like dance, lighting design, flying drones and algorithmic generation of images. Their new show sees both share the stage next to each other, and confirms the synergy between their respective creative universes: on one side the Los Angeles musician’s abstract beats and emotive melodies; while on the other, real time 'scanning' and overflowing visual creativity from the Japanese artist, all resulting in an extremely captivating, technologically advanced, show of inordinate beauty.
Respected by music fans the world over for its eclectic lineup, high-quality production and unwavering support for legendary and pioneering electronic artists, Sónar represents another major coup for Hong Kong’s cultural scene. Linking music, creativity and technology, Sónar has a well-earned reputation for uniting electronic music lovers and creative people from different disciplines and communities, offering a unique platform for cultural collaboration.
The festival, which was launched in Barcelona in 1994 and has gone on to host a diversearray of music and creative technology innovators every year since, will take place across five stages at the Hong Kong Science Park, from 11am to 3am on Saturday 1st April 2017.
For the festival’s Hong Kong debut, audiences can look forward to an expertly curated mix of established artists and hotly tipped emerging talents, and diverse performances ranging from live acts to DJs, and dance-floor- driven sets to experimental electronica.
