translatio Exhibition opening | performances, photography, installations, drawings & stage plays translatio, Latin noun for transmission, is a multi-media exhibition showcasing live performances, photography, installations, drawings and stage plays by artists from France and Hong Kong, exchanging and interpreting the legacy of the late French author and photographer, Edouard Levé (1965 – 2007). Curated by Lalie Choffel, founder of CHARBON, translatio aims to explore the transmission, translation and impact through artistic dialogues and games of the late French artist Edouard Levé’s vision and legacy with both Hong Kong and France based artists. The transmission takes place in time but also in space, operating from a French context to that of Hong Kong, multiplying this fascinating journey between the creator and his double, between concepts and the incarnation of transferred ideas. A part of the exhibition will display artwork from French artists who worked on very similar matter, in the same country and at the same time as Levé. The similarity of those searches is very interesting, knowing that none of the participating knew Levé. Another part of the exhibition will be art games inspired by Levé’s first book Oeuvres (2002) (means “works” in English) – a book describing 533 non-existent conceptual artworks that Levé would never realise – inviting local artists to respond to Levé’s proposals and ideas by creating their own art piece. Through this, the Hong Kong artists will extend Levé’s journey and explore his legacy in an innovative yet paradoxical gesture by working in the negative space left by the author. These artists might offer Levé’s ideas a rebirth while remodeling them in an absolute and original way. Participating artists Cally Yu (Hong Kong) – writing Christophe Bonacorsi (France) – minor art piece, Je suis l’Autre (“I am the Other”) Christophe Tostain (France) – stage play co-director, sound designer Enoch Cheng (Hong Kong) - performance Fabrice Michel (France) – stage play actor & co-director La Man (Hong Kong) - photography Mark Chung (Hong Kong) – installation, photography Maurice Benayoun (France) – book, photography Régis Gonzalez (France) – ink self-portraits Grand Opening Saturday 24 September 2016 | 12.30 p.m. Meet The Curator & Seminar | 12.30 p.m. & 6.00 p.m. (Duration: 10 minutes each) Artist Sharing by Mark Chung | 4.30 p.m. (Duration: 15 minutes) Performance by Enoch Cheng | 6.30 p.m. (Duration: 15 minutes) Free Entrance at CHARBON art space Artist Sharing by Maurice Benayoun Saturday 8 October 2016 | 6.00 p.m. (Duration: 1 hour) Free Entrance at CHARBON art space Stage Plays by Fabrice Michel 18 - 21 October 2016 | 8.30 p.m. (Duration: 1 hour) Language: French with English subtitles Tickets: HKD300 each CHARBON art space Exhibition period 24 September – 5 November 2016 Every Wednesday to Saturday | 1.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. (except public holidays)
