EXCLUSIVE ASIAN PREMIERE
"In a production as stunningly performed as this, the clever patterning . . . allows the action to reach extremes of emotion, even horror, without losing an underpinning bassline beat of laughter." ★★★★★ The Observer
Wildly funny, deeply affecting, grotesquely macabre
Ireland’s multi award-winning theatre company
INTRODUCTION
Maureen and her mother Mag live together in close quarters, trading petty insults and manoeuvering for control in their confined and isolated world. But when a family acquaintance appears and offers Maureen a chance of love and a new life, everything changes. Druid premiered this modern Irish classic in Galway in 1996; West End and Broadway transfers won rave reviews, including four Tony awards for the 1998 production, with Best Direction for Garry Hynes, the first woman to win a Tony in this category.
Hynes, who co-founded Druid in 1975, directs this special 20th anniversary production. Marie Mullen, co-founder of Druid and winner of a Tony award for Best Actress as Maureen, plays Mag in this production. She is accompanied by a stellar cast of award-winning Irish actors: Aaron Monaghan, Marty Rea and Aisling O'Sullivan.
The Beauty Queen of Leenane contains the brash humour, rich language and inventive storytelling for which Martin McDonagh has been widely praised. His catalogue of hit works includes winners of Olivier, Tony, Drama Desk, Critic's Circle, Academy and Golden Globe awards.
