"These exquisite dancers set a standard for contemporary ballet." Bachtrack
Named and famed for jazzing it up
INTRODUCTION
Explosive and original, Canada’s most exhilarating dance company is famed for “jazzing up” the ballet classics. Sensational collaborations between world-class dancers and talented choreographers are now a hallmark of this internationally recognised company.
Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili’s Mono Lisa updates the classical pas de deux. In a tale of seduction set to a funky mechanical score, a man and woman play cat and mouse. It’s sensual and acrobatic, with breathtaking movements en pointe. In contrast, driven by Pérez Prado’s joyful Cuban music, Galili’s O Balcao de Amor fizzes with comedic sparks and delightful absurdity.
Kosmos by former Béjart and Lyon Ballet dancer Andonis Foniadakis takes inspiration from the rhythms, the craziness and energy of big cities to celebrate humanity and its creativity. Set to Phillip Glass’s minimalist solo piano piece, Closer, by much sought after choreographer Benjamin Millepied, is the voluptuous, vibrant exploration of tension between two human bodies.
Les Ballets Jazz burst into life in Montreal in 1972. Its work has since graced stages in more than sixty-six countries. This programme showcases all the artistry and energy that have made it famous across the globe.
