Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thailand, b. 1970) is a director and filmmaker based in Chiang Mai. His films draw on the social and political realities of everyday life, pairing this material with surreal stories that highlight his interest in taboo subjects.

This strange and lifeless family comes to resemble the swamp they live beside, shrouded in haze and hot gases. Lucrecia Martel (Argentina, b. 1966) is a leading figure in Argentine New Wave cinema. Her works, often set in the north-western region of the country where she grew up, depict the cumulative pressures and insecurities of society and colonial history, casting an unblinking eye on Argentina’s cultural and economic decline.
