Should public libraries evolve from developing book collection to creating connections in the community? “The LIBoratory Project”, a 5-month public service innovation lab never before done in Hong Kong, is coming to an end. Since September 2016, the Lab Team has installed themselves at the Po On Road Public Library in Sham Shui Po to experiment with grounded library innovation and explore how public libraries can respond creatively to the needs of the community. Guest Speakers of Finale: Learnings from the LIBoratory Project Dr. Louis NG Deputy Director, Leisure and Cultural Services Department A professionally trained curator and historian, he is now responsible for the overall management of museums, heritage preservation, performing arts, visual arts and public library service at the Department. Ada WONG Chairperson, Make A Difference Institute Ada has led a varied career as solicitor, educator and social entrepreneur. She is a staunch advocate of social innovation, creative education and cultural development. She is also Convenor & Director of The Good Lab, Chairperson of Make A Difference Institute, Director of Hong Kong Institute of Contemporary Culture and supervisor of HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity. Can it be a way out for the complain culture in town? Rack-on-the-go Kaifongs love reading newspapers. What if there is a new communal space for reading newspaper other than the library? How did kaifongs respond? What do they need and what are some good locations? South Asian Bookshare The South Asian community rarely visits the library. The team has been experimenting on a South Asian bookcrossing network. How might we attract them to the library? How to encourage cross-ethnic communication in the culturally diverse community? The World in a Book - Exploring Reading and Libraries Books in the library are usually well arranged to give a proper and orderly feeling. Experimenting on lively book curation based on themes to arouse readers’ interest and lead them to chart new reading terrains. Friends of Library What if citizens can also organize activities in the library? What if libraries can better reflect district characters? What does your dream library look like? What are you willing to do for it? Experimenting Library Space Grandpa says, “I come here everyday as there’s no air conditioning back home. Sometimes I want to have a little chat with others.” Mum says, “My little boy just can't sit still. I'm afraid he may disturb others.” A youngster says, “The library smells like an elderly home and it doesn't feel right!” How can the library better meet the expectations of different groups of users through spatial and atmospheric design?
