Exhibition pamphlet and caption board; book, magazine, serviettes, paper currency; birth certificate, diploma, employment contract, property assignment, passport, wedding invitation, papier-mâché ritual offerings……Our everyday existence is heavily dependent on paper and paper products. Our everyday existence is heavily dependent on paper and paper products. From the moment we were born to graduating from school, being employed and, promoted; from buying our own property to travels abroad, marriage and even in death; paper is a silent witness to many defining moments in our journey of life. Paper making, which played an important role in cultural development and shaping civilisation, is honoured as one of the Four Great Inventions of Ancient China. Made from natural material as a vessel for recording and sharing thoughts, knowledge and beliefs to be passed down through the centuries and generations, paper was crucial in enabling the development of humanity. Yet as a result of quantum leaps in technological advancement, a digitised world has emerged. Nowadays, how many people still regularly write letters with pen and paper, print out photographs, or collect ticket stubs as memorabilia? Lost in the paperless world is the tactile connection to personal memories and milestones. Just imagine, if paper was never invented or no longer exists, will there still be a place for delicate brushstrokes to dance on and murmured love stories to unfold? Eight JCCAC studios explore modern paper making and the ever-changing role and value of paper in the digital age, and challenge us to rethink the core values and beliefs of our time, by giving paper a voice through their artworks presented in this exhibition.
