年輕貌美的十三妹 (鍾楚紅 飾) 隻身遠赴美國和男友VINCENT (陳百強 飾) 一同讀書及生活。不料， VINCENT早已移情別戀，並決定與新女友 PEGGY (吳福星 飾) 移居波士頓。十三妹心灰意冷， 開始自我封閉起來，什麼也不聞不問。
某天，她險些吸入過量的煤氣毒身亡， 幸得住在樓下的船頭尺(周潤發 飾)及時相救才保著性命。在船頭尺的悉心照顧下，十三妹開始重拾自信，面對人生， 而二人的關係亦因此變得微妙起來。
