Lumenvisum is pleased to present ZOOMING OUT – A Solo Exhibition by Dio Wong, the local photographer and new media artist, who has spent four years for creating, settling and sorting out a series of images taken in the zoo. In his creation, Dio turned to zoos as his muses and sites of actual photo making. In this solo exhibition, the artist not only expresses his awareness and concerns about zoos, he also attempts to extend his various imaginations of zoos to our everyday life and social issues. In this exhibition, the gallery will be turned into a dark space and composed with two series of work: a series of images printed on glass mirrors, and an interactive video programming installation that allows audiences to participate and experience. Dio’s work is not just criticizing the zoo, though he documented thousands of confined animals, be browsed and consumed in high speed day by day. Tides of people keep flowing unceasingly in zoos yet no one can halt for even a mindful glance and just take a photo then check-in on social media in a rush. Another focus under the lens, is the artificial and unnatural surroundings of zoos which were constructed as secure shelter, a comfortable place but under rigorous surveillance. While convention is important, act without taking time to think and go with the flow blindly are usual practices, being trapped in the region believed to be safe and steady is unconscious, Dio reminds us suspicion, curiosity and criticism are always the manifestations of freedom of thought. Opening Reception:7.7.2017 (Fri) 6-8pm Artist’s Talk:29.7.2017 (Sat) 3-4:30pm Artist’s Workshop:22.7.2017 (Sat) 3-4:30pm

Artist Statement In my eyes, tides of people keep flowing unceasingly; no one can halt for even a mindful glance; take a photo then check-in on social media in a rush, time is limited while focuses are not. In my eyes, there are thousands of confined focuses, be browsed and consumed in high speed day by day; living souls forgotten, deaths substituted, eternal return. In my eyes, whether mountain, tree, water or cave, all are shadows of illusions to construct a secure shelter, a comfortable place under rigorous surveillance with daily necessaries guaranteed. In my eyes, the mass is composed of countless individuals with self-awareness dismissed, rendering and connecting with each other. While convention is important, act without taking time to think and go with the flow blindly are usual practices, being trapped in the region believed to be safe and steady is unconscious. In my eyes, that is me. “The unexamined life is not worth living.” — Socrates Docent-guided visits available for groups. Please contact us for details.
