"I face pressure. You face pressure", Hong Kong has always been ranked low in the World Happiness report, and high on the stress index. To promote the importance of Space-Out and to help Hong Kong people to relieve some stress, the 6th International Space-Out Competition is coming to Hong Kong. After Beijing, Netherland and Taiwan, this will be the 1st official International Space-Out Competition to be held in Asia in 2018. Taking place in AIA Vitality Park at the Hong Kong Observation Wheel in Central, the competition is now set for the 31st of March 2018. Eighty finalists will attempt to stay in total space-out condition for the entire competition which will last for a full 90 minutes. The 1st Hong Kong Space-Out champion will be decided based on votes from the audience and measurements of each competitor’s heart rate stability. There will also be other events to see such as music performances, seminars by mental health professionals and a Space-Out trail zone, aiming to create the 1st Space-Out festival for all city dwellers!
Where did the Space-Out Competition come from?
The "Mapo Bridge" in South Korea is known as the "Bridge of Death" due to the hundreds of suicides that have occurred there in just a few years. To get people to stop and think before they decided to jump-off, questions were hung on the railings of the bridge such as ‘Are you doing good these days?” and “What is bothering you?”, in hope of reducing the suicide rate. However, the suicide rate still increased and it quickly became six times higher.
This inspired Woopsyang, a performance artist in South Korea, to theorize that a ‘non-stop thinking process’ is the main source of stress for people living in modern cities. When a person is under great pressure, maybe more thinking might just magnify the feeling that there are just too many "responsibilities" and "problems" to handle. Hence, more thinking might mean more pain. Woopsyang realized that ‘spacing-out’ could be the ultimate way to relieve stress, and therefore, she created the 1st Space-Out Competition in 2014 as a performance art event. She encouraged people to space-out, put their mobile phone and work aside, and empty their minds, consciously and quietly. The 1st Space-Out event was a big success and it quickly became popular not only in Korea but also over the world. This year, 4,000 people have signed up for the local Space-Out Competition in Korea.
