Lumenvisum initiated the Artist and Photographer Conversation Series in 2011 to serve as a platform for cross-disciplinary dialogue, each time conjuring a collaborative exhibition as the creative outcome. “Duo Ends” is the eighth edition of the Artist and Photographer Conversation Series. In the last half a year, multifaceted visual artist Francis Yu and multimedia artist Jamsen Law have engaged in deep dialogues on their artistic ideas and practices. Both eminent artists in their own fields, they have found kindred spirits in each other in their sharing towards photography in different creative process. In the exhibition, Yu and Law attempt to demonstrate their own photographic approach over the years through different series of works. About the Artists// Francis Yu Born and raised in Hong Kong. He went abroad to study art and gained a BFA in visual arts at York University in Toronto. After that he completed a MA in painting at the Royal College of Art in London and furthered the study of a PhD in practice and theory of painting at China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Yu’s art practice revolves around painting. His works present a territory negotiated between texts, images, objects, and the space they dwell, from contrasting perspective. Over the last two decades he has held ten solo exhibitions and has taken part in more than sixty group exhibitions at local and overseas institutions. For the last few years, Yu has been exploring an interdisciplinary approach to marry his paintings with different art forms and artistic disciplines. He intends to examine how contemporary painting opens itself up towards continual totalization through the multiplicity of practice. Yu is an Associate Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University, where he teaches all levels of painting and drawing. Jamsen Law Born and grew up in Hong Kong, Jamsen Law’s independent video works have been exhibited in festivals in Europe, Asia, North and South America, such as Videobrasil International Electronic Art Festival, Transmediale Berlin and Ogaki Biennale. He also had his solo screenings in Toronto, Tokyo, Busan and Hong Kong. Jamsen’s works explore the meaning of process and existence, consciousness and interiority through multiple artforms. After his research on media aesthetics in Institute of Advanced Media Art and Science in Japan, he started to curate media arts-related artist-in-residence and collaborative projects.
