On 28 and 29 March, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), London together with M+ and the Hong Kong Arts Centre, presents a screening programme of three works by the filmmaker, writer, theorist, and composer Trinh T Minh-ha. Hugely influential in the fields of feminism and postcolonial studies through her writing and moving-image work, Vietnamese-born Trinh T Minh-ha is currently Professor of Rhetoric and Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. During the screening she presents and discusses the three films: The Fourth Dimension (2001), Forgetting Vietnam (2015) and Reassemblage(1982). Throughout her oeuvre, Trinh has developed innovative and experimental approaches to image-making and storytelling. Dedicated to questioning totalising systems of knowledge, and representations and categories of identity, her work is characterised by its interdisciplinarity, reflexivity, and inclusion of multiple voices. She considers each work to exist as a 'boundary event', eluding labels such as documentary, fiction and experimental film, and instead inhabiting the spaces in between these designations. Trinh T Minh-ha’s work includes eight feature-length films, several large-scale collaborative installations, and numerous publications including Lovecidal: Walking with The Disappeared (2016), D-Passage: The Digital Way (2013), Elsewhere, Within Here (2011) and Cinema Interval (1999). Trinh has been the recipient of many awards, including the Wild Dreamer Lifetime Achievement Award at the Subversive Festival, Zagreb, Croatia, 2014; the Lifetime Achievement Award Women’s Caucus for Art, 2012; and the Trailblazers Award, MIPDOC, Cannes, France, 2006. This programme is presented by the Institute of Contemporary Arts together with M+ and the Hong Kong Arts Centre, in collaboration with the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and in association with Art Basel Hong Kong. * The talks will be conducted in English, with Cantonese simultaneous interpretation. ** Free admission.
