“Interactive and Playful – Swiss Design from Zurich University of the Arts” is a celebration of the partnership between HKDI and Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). To be held at the Experience Centre of HKDI, this exhibition showcases a selection of distinctive bachelor’s, master’s and research projects from the seven subject areas offered by the design school, namely Cast / Audiovisual Media; Game Design; Industrial Design; Interaction Design; Knowledge Visualisation; Trends & Identity; and Visual Communication. The projects reflect the notion of design, how design is understood and taught today, and how this knowledge can contribute to social and technological innovations. Addressing experiences, emotions and senses, ZHdK students demonstrate a breakthrough of design from merely being physical objects and spaces. Through this multimedia exhibition, visitors will be surrounded by immersive media and interactive intelligent objects that transcend purely technical functions or fashionable qualities, as design was once perceived to be. “Interactive and Playful – Swiss Design from Zurich University of the Arts” will present 10 recent outstanding projects by ZHdK students and graduates, including works on industrial design, visual communication, sensory explorations, and interactive installations. Crafting great narratives to tell stories about everyday life, with an emphasis on the social, experiential and conceptual, the young designers drew inspiration from the digitalisation of design and channelled their creativity in both playful and serious ways. Highlights from the show include the interactive kinetic light installation “Through Momentum”; “Titan Arum”, an interactive installation of the extremely rare moment of the blooming of the largest flower in the world; and “Smell Forward”, a fictional exploration of the scents of the past, present and future.
