Description
Lighthouse Family has Twenty-five years’ music-making. Era-defining songs. Ten million records sold. Five Top Ten singles, four Top Ten albums. Chart-busting success in the UK, across Europe and in the Far East, Australia and New Zealand. Lighthouse Family, made up of vocalist Tunde Baiyewu and producer/keyboardist Paul Tucker, is one of the biggest British bands of the mid-late 90s. Their first single, “Lifted”, released in 1995, was one of the defining songs of the era, an uplifting pop-soul classic that was inescapable on radio, becoming the soundtrack of high street Britain, drivetime Britain and night-out Britain. Three further hit singles followed: “Ocean Drive”, “Loving Every Minute” and “Goodbye Heartbreak”. Together they helped the Newcastle-based duo of Baiyewu and Tucker sell 2.75m copies of their debut album Ocean Drive – an album released in late 1995, the high watermark of Britpop. By the end of 1997 – 154 weeks later – it was still in the album charts, going six-times platinum. Lighthouse Family repeated the feat. Their 1997 follow-up, Postcards From Heaven, featured three Top Ten singles – “Raincloud”, “High” and “Lost in Space” – and also went six-times platinum, charting across Europe, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand, selling 4m albums globally. Their third album, Whatever Gets You Through The Day (2001), produced another Top Ten single in the shape of “(I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be) Free/One”, an inspired mash-up of the U2 anthem “One” and soul classic made her own by Nina Simone. And now, after a gap of 18 years, the duo have reunited and released their fourth studio album on 3 May 2019. Entitled Blue Sky in Your Head and featuring the first single, “My Salvation”, an upbeat, clubby track that flies high on lush strings, the album is a return to the classic song-writing and lushly produced sounds that made Lighthouse Family an instantly recognisable sensation.
