Warship saving people in the middle of the sea, train stuffed with refugees trying to across the border, camps and fields where refugees are forced to become sex workers…… These are real scenes documented by Swiss director, Markus Imhoof. Documentary Eldorado was selected as the Swiss entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards, this film profoundly examines the European refugee crisis and the living situation of refugees. In fact, long before Eldorado, a personal memory had planted the seed of caring for refugees deeply into Imhoof’s heart. This unique memory is also presented in the film. Back when he was just a little boy during World War II, his family sheltered an Italian refugee girl called Giovanna, but she was forced back to Italy after the war. Despite the distance, these two accidental siblings kept being pen-pal for years. However, unfortunately, due to malnutrition and trauma, Giovanna fell ill very young. It is the director’s genuine wish that Eldorado can be a wake-up call for the society, people who have been burying their heads into day-to-day life need to wake up and see the lives struggling on the boundary lines. On August 22nd , 2019, in the honour of International Day of Commemorating the Victims of Violence Based on Religion or Belief, China Women’s Film Festival will host a free screening of Swiss documentary Eldorado.
