The exhibition is now extended to 15 November 2020. The University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) is honoured to display six newly donated works by Wesley Tongson (1957–2012). Known both for his traditional ink work and unique style of finger painting, this display combines both techniques, including his mountain landscapes and bamboo paintings, which together document his imaginative move from brush to finger. Although modest in terms of number of works, the scope of the paintings spans twenty crucial years of Tongson’s life. He considered landscape paintings the most difficult form of Chinese art to master, referring to himself as the ‘mountain Taoist’ or ‘mountain teacher’. Nature offered him a spiritual retreat, a zen-like space that—along with his painting practice—he could withdraw into. Tongson’s work displays a deep understanding of the natural and spiritual meaning of the Chinese landscape and a continuous appreciation for traditional masters, including their philosophies, art and culture.
