After premiering in 2016 and touring to wide acclaim the Xiqu Centre’s first experimental Cantonese opera commission “Farewell My Concubine” (New Adaptation) returns this November as part of the Experimental Chinese Opera Festival. Experimental Chinese Opera Festival 2020
The Experimental Chinese Opera Festival highlights original productions and new perspectives on Chinese opera. This year, adjusting our original programme around the on-going travel restrictions, we present performances of two Xiqu Centre-produced experimental Cantonese opera works – Farewell My Concubine (New Adaptation) and the Hong Kong premiere of Wenguang Explores the Valley – plus a specially curated series of free Creative Sharing Sessions with creators and performers from four regional troupes: Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, Shanghai Yue Opera House, Jin Liansheng Gaojia Opera Troupe of Xiamen City and Contemporary Legend Theatre. Joining us live online, troupes discuss their work and offer insight into some of the productions we hope to present in the near future. The sessions explore curatorial perspectives, regional genres, creative choices and performance styles, include video excerpts from highlighted works, and offer audiences the chance to exchange ideas with the artists and experts.
