Hong Kong artist Jessie Siu's solo exhibition When the Bubble Bursts is based on the theme of Diamond Sutra " This fleeting world is like a bubble in a stream, a flash of lightning , a phantom and a dream." According to Buddhism, all sentient beings are trapped in the cycle of existence known as samsara. There's no end to this repetitive cycle of birth and death among the six realms of reality. Instead of finding escape, we devote ourselves entirely to pursue happiness. We are totally suspended in the reality bubble and wander aimlessly from one life to another. When will we be able to wake up from this dream? With all the dazzling outer temptations, how are we to cultivate an inner world without attachment to the beauty and fragrance of the flowers? How are we to stay calm on rough waters? Examining these questions are the only pathway to the land of ultimate freedom.
Jessie Siu, a postgraduate in philosophy of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, is a self-taught painter. Since her encounter with Buddhism in 2018, the philosophy of Buddhist teachings has been a recurring theme for her work. Making art has come to be a meditation practice for the artist. She strongly believes as the tip of the paint brush moves across the canvas she too traverses between the two realities. One day she will finally reach the land of the ultimate truth. To challenge the limitations of the flatness and stillness of the canvas, Jessie continuously explores different styles and medium to be used. Her works have been showcased in local and international exhibitions and events including Hong Kong, Taiwan, UK and Greece.
