The title of this exhibition: "I don’t want to change you", from the song of the same name by Damien Rice, the lyrics are about emotional active and passive relationships, Damien Rice’s song is heavily attached to the exhibition’s core value which is “All the thing in the world is neutral, there is no good thing or bad thing. How do you give the meaning of the matters depends on your point of view.”
“This kind of accidental visit may be like an advertisement on the street, a page of a book read, a song played on the radio, and a person across the road. These will all become a kind of writing, it may become a poem, it may be a painting, it may be a photo, and there is no certain inevitable form.” Said, Chen Wei Ting.
We count on the great Chen Wei Ting at his first solo show in Hong Kong known for his poems, he will delight us with his unique performance. Born in Tainan, Taiwan in 1991. His childhood was full of cartoons, and he liked to draw characters. At Fu Jen University, he majored in Chinese Literature and started to write poems. He devoted his life to the arts thinking the writing is a slice of life, writing poems became another way of making a drawing.
Chen Wei Ting’s work is mostly graphics with acrylic paints, often accompanied by poems that correspond to the visual arts and provide a complete sense of a story. He uses a lot of childhood memories and symbolic figures in his creations such as teddy bears, antique toys, intuitive graffiti drawings, costume characters, and so on. In many cases, the viewer sees them as “kidult.” His painting starts as diary recordings, which tend to be in a written form. This writing is more in line with one of the interpretations of his work, just like the “fragments” that Roland Barthes mentioned.
“My personal experience is characteristic of my generation. It writes feelings I face unclearly, but intuitively and willfully awakening the utter innocence in my skin. I strongly believe that creativity is the way I converse with the world.” Said Chen Wei Ting.
Equipped with an alluring environment the gallery is warm and full of life, the lightings match the paintings perfectly highlighting the unique works of art. Paintings that had been selected very carefully and perfectly embody the spirit of contemporary art and the theme of the exhibit.
